A healthy alternative to sugar-filled Halloween candy. Halloween Apple Donuts are tasty, healthy, and fun to make together.

Halloween Apple Donuts

Halloween is lots of people's favorite holiday. And I'm sure part of that is because growing up it's a lot about the candy. There seems to be no escaping it. It starts appearing days or weeks in advance and you just have to have a stock at home for trick or treaters.

And I'm not saying you shouldn't do that. Definitely not. There's always a time and a place for candy and sweets. And Halloween is certainly one of those times!

But we can still offer some healthy additions. Both for fun and to give more variety to the whole candy event.

By consistently offering healthy choices, you also encourage healthier eating habits. These days, my son reaches for an apple when he's hungry about as often as my husband reaches for chocolate!

And we love these Halloween Apple Donuts not only because they are tasty and good for you, but also because they are easy and fun for your child to make with you.

And you can just as easily make them all year round too!

Halloween Apple Donuts Ingredients

Halloween Apple Donuts

To make these Halloween Apple Donuts, you'll need the following ingredients:

Apples. One of the most diverse fruits, and it's pretty much available any time of year. If possible choose organic due to possible pesticide residue and wax on the skin. You can also just remove the skin, although it does have great nutritional benefits.

Peanut butter. Ideally, choose a peanut butter that is made of 100% peanuts. So no added sugar, salt, or palm oil.

Healthy Nutella. Check out our recipe for healthy Nutella here. You can use store-bought but we recommend our own. There won't be a sugar rush and the parents can enjoy eating it with a spoon (we all know we do that:))

Blueberries. Or any other forest fruit will do just fine.

Nuts. We always prefer hazelnuts for these types of things (a Nutella obsession) but any other nut you have works too.

Granola. Check out our Homemade Granola recipe here. Or you can use a store-bought one just check that it doesn't have palm oil or high-fructose corn syrup added.

Dark chocolate. Look for ones that have 70% cocoa and up.

Banana. A medium-ripe one will be perfect here.

Halloween Apple Donuts Nutritional Benefits

Apples are a wonderful source of nutrients of which fiber and vitamin C are the highest. They also have several phytonutrients (small compounds in foods that do wonders for our health) that can help the body defend against cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes.

Peanut butter provides healthy fats and protein, plus micronutrients such as biotin and copper.

Healthy Nutella. Contains good fats and protein from the hazelnuts and antioxidants from the cocoa powder.

Blueberries. One of the fruits with the highest antioxidant content which can be a great way to lower the risk of certain heart diseases.

Nuts. A great source of healthy fats and protein. And calories 🙂

Granola. Provides fiber and certain minerals like iron, magnesium and copper from the oats as well as good fats and protein from the nuts and seeds.

Dark chocolate. The higher the cocoa % in the chocolate the higher the antioxidant content. And these antioxidants found in chocolate have been shown to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Banana provides a slightly sweet taste as well as a lot of potassium, and vitamins B6 and C.

How To Make Halloween Apple Donuts

Prepare the apples. Wash the apples and cut them width-ways into circles.

Punch holes in the middle of each "donut". If you have small cookie cutters (about an inch ) use those but I actually used a lid from the milk (I washed it before) and it worked perfectly.

Sprinkle some lemon juice on the apples to avoid them going brown. Just a tiny amount.

Arrange the spreads and toppings!

  • Spread some peanut butter over the apple slice and top of with granola and blueberries.
  • Spread healthy Nutella over the apple slice and cover with finely chopped nuts.
  • Spread some healthy Nutella over the apple slice and top off with banana coins.
  • Spread some peanut butter over the apple slice and top of with some dark chocolate.
  • Mix and match any toppings you like!
