Ingredients

labelled ingredients on a white background
  • Apples - you can choose any kind, but the sweeter the better (e.g. Fuji or Gala). If you are making for a really small baby (6 – 8 months) I would advise to peel off the skin because their digestive systems might not be able to digest them yet. Apples are a wonderful source of nutrients of which fiber and vitamin C are the highest

Optional

  • Coconut oil - gives it a delicious baked goods taste and also adds more fats which keeps the kids full for longer. You can use butter also
  • Cinnamon - for the heartwarming and sweet taste

How to bake apples for baby? Step-by-step instructions

step by step collage of instructions
  1. Peel and cut the apples.
    • For a baby under 9 months old you core and halve the apples so it is easier for them to hold.
    • For an older baby, toddler or kids you want to do baked apple slices - slice the apple into eigths (as shown on picture below)

2. Preheat oven to 190 °C / 375 °F. On a deeper baking dish place the coconut oil and put into the oven to melt.

3. Once melted remove from the baking dish from the oven using an oven glove. Place the apples in the dish, sprinkle with cinnamon and then toss to combine so that all the apples are coated in cinnamon and coconut oil.

4. Bake for about 20 minutes. If you are making apple halves and apple slices, apple slices will be ready sooner so remove them once they start to brown and leave the halves in for another 10-15 minutes until they are browned and tender.

5. Serve on their own as a baby snack, or with breakfast with pancakes or on top of oatmeals, yogurt, cottage cheese.

How to store and reheat baked apples for baby?

Storage

  • Fridge – place in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer – place in airtight container in freezer up to 3 months and thaw in fridge overnight

Reheating from frozen

  • Reheat in the oven at 180°C / 350°F for about 10-15 min.
  • Reheat in microwave for about 15 sec on defrost setting (depending on the microwave)

Tips

  • for babies under 9 months old you want to halve the apples rather than slice them as it is easier for them to hold
  • peeling the apples is easier on the baby's digestive system

Variations

  • use butter instead of coconut oil if you prefer
  • use spices such as nutmeg, ginger, five spice if you want more flavor
  • chop them into smaller pieces so they are a nice oatmeal topping

FAQ

Can babies eat cinnamon?

Cinnamon is not a common allergen and is safe for babies 6 months old + in small amounts.

When can baby eat apple raw?

Baby can eat apple raw from about 9 months of age but it should still be sliced very thinly or grated to avoid choking.

Do I need to peel the skin from the apple for baby?

No, but it is better to peel the apple skin until baby is about 9 months old as apple skin can be hard on their digestive system at a younger age.
