How to Make Chickpea Flour?
Chickpea flour, or in some areas of the world it is known as garbanzo bean flour, gram flour or besan flour is basically ground raw chickpeas.
You can find it readily available in your local grocery store or this one online.
To make besam flour place a small batch of chickpeas in a high-speed blender or food processor.
Blend on high speed until the chickpeas are ground into a fine powder. Stop occasionally to scrape down the sides for even grinding. Then sift the ground chickpeas through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any larger pieces.
Re-blend any remaining larger pieces until finely ground. Store the garbanzo bean flour in an airtight container in a cool, dry place and use it when ready to make homemade tortillas.
Is Chickpea Flour Gluten-Free?
Yes, garbanzo bean flour is naturally gluten-free. It is made entirely from ground chickpeas, which do not contain gluten. This makes it a popular choice for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
Always ensure that the flour is processed in a gluten-free facility if you have severe gluten intolerance, as cross-contamination can occur in facilities that process other gluten-containing grains.
Chickpea Flour Nutrition
- Good source of protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium, and folate.
- Lower in carbohydrates compared to wheat flour and offers a higher protein content, beneficial for special diets such as vegetarian and gluten-free diets.
- High dietary fiber content aids in digestion and helps maintain steady blood sugar levels.
How to Make Chickpea Tortillas?
For this super easy vegan tortillas recipe you need only a cup of flour, a cup of water and a pinch of salt.
- In a mixing jug or large bowl combine the 3 ingredients and mix thoroughly with a whisk and let it stand for 30 minutes so the flour absorbs the water and gives a nice batter.
- Heat a non-stick skillet on medium-high heat and brush the surface with olive oil.
- Pour a ladle of batter onto the center. Tilt the skillet to spread it gently to form a tortilla.
- Once the edges have started to lift (about 2 minutes) use a silicone spatula to flip the tortilla.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Continue with the rest of the batter until you have your stack of gluten-free tortillas.
Additions
You can add different spices to your gluten-free wraps to enhance the flavor such as:
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- ground turmeric
- ground cumin
Storage
I prefer to store my chickpea flour tortillas in the fridge in an airtight container and then reheat them in the oven for 10 minutes and 300 F/150 C.
They should last about 3 days in the fridge but I think you will be getting through them pretty fast.
What to Serve With Chickpea Flour wraps?
You can fill your chickpea wraps with all kids of stuff. We like to alternate between these and other homemade tortilla recipes such as red lentil wraps, gluten-free quinoa tortillas, and spinach wraps for when we make sheet-pan tofu fajitas, falafels, grilled chicken spinach wrap, shred some chicken thighs or chop some lentil patties and cover with a garlicky dressing, sour cream, or green pesto dressing.
You can also use the homemade tortillas to add sweet fillings such as homemade nutella with dates or any other of your favorite fillings.
