Why is Prunes Puree a Great Baby Food?

Prunes have been known as a great remedy to relieve constipation.

And not only for adults but also for baby constipation. Not only can they be served as single foods and fruit but by simply blending them with water you can also get an easy baby food puree that you can serve immediately, store for later or freeze for some long-term storage.

So if you're a new parent and have just starting weaning your baby, this easy baby recipe is made with whole prunes and is not only a natural laxative (which can be very helpful in those first days of weaning) but also a nutritious food and a great addition to anyone's nutrition.

Health Benefits of Prunes

Prunes are a great fruit with a high fiber content and sweet tastes.

They are actually dehydrated (so dried) plums and filled with natural sugars and energy.

They also have a high content of potassium and even iron.

So they really are a great addition to your baby's diet.

Ingredients for Prunes Puree

To make this easy recipe you will only need one simple ingredient. Well, actually two, but one of those everyone has at home.

  • Sweet prunes: when buying prunes, to ensure I am really getting healthy prunes I always make sure that they have been organically grown and with no added ingredients
  • Water: tap water is just fine but if your baby has just started weaning you can also use filtered water or bottled water

How To Make Prune Puree - Step-by-Step

To make your prune baby food recipe, follow these easy steps:

1. Put the prunes into a bowl and cover with hot water.

2. Allow to soak for at least 30 minutes.

3. Once soaked and the prunes are soft enough to mash, transfer the prunes into a blender or food processor and add 2 tablespoons of the water used for soaking.

4. Blend and if needed keep adding tablespoon by tablespoon of the water until you have a smooth homemade baby food puree.

5. Once you reach a smooth consistency, transfer the puree into a bowl.

6. Serve per choice.

How To Serve Prunes Puree

This easy recipe is that much more better because you can literally serve this prune baby food recipe with anything. Here are some great ways on how to use your smooth puree - and they are not only for babies!

  • add into baby's oatmeal
  • add into plain yogurt
  • spread on toast and serve as finger foods
  • add into a smoothie
  • simple serve as is

Storage

If needed, you can always make a lot of puree and store for later use.

This homemade prune puree can be stored in an airtight container or sterilized glass jar for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

Another option is to put the prepared puree into an ice cube tray and freeze as smaller portions.

Once frozen you can take out and put into silicone bags and back into the freezer. Here they can stay for about 6 months.

FAQ

How To Thaw Homemade Prune Puree?

I find it easiest to thaw purees at room temperature. You just need to remember to take it out a couple of hours before serving. If you forget or for some reason you are not able to, you can always defrost in the microwave or oven on a defrost option.

How Much Prune Puree Should I Give For Digestive Discomfort?

Constipation and digestive tract issues is a common problem for babies especially when they start eating solid foods. To allow the prunes to do their magic and work on relieving constipation, I suggest starting by adding small amounts into your babies diet and then gently increasing tablespoon by tablespoon at each consecutive meal until you reach your goal.
