Difference Between an (Avocado) Chocolate Mousse and (Avocado) Chocolate Pudding
Culinarily speaking yes. There is a difference between a mousse and a pudding. A mousse is made by folding either whipped egg whites or whipped cream into a creamy mixture. A pudding is made usually by cooking egg yolks and then joining them with milk and other ingredients to form a creamy dense mixture.
The difference really is in the way they are prepared. But the truth is that they can taste almost the same.
Since we don't have whipped cream or egg whites in this recipe it might look like calling this a mousse might be stretching it a bit. However, the blended avocado provides such a light and creamy texture that this dessert is way closer to a mousse than a pudding.
Ingredients
- Ripe Avocados: The star of our recipe, ripe avocados not only lend a creamy texture but also offer a plethora of health benefits. Packed with healthy fats, avocados are a fantastic addition to any dessert, contributing to a velvety consistency.
- Vegan Chocolate: A crucial element in our chocolate avocado mousse recipe, vegan chocolate brings a luscious, indulgent taste without compromising on your dietary choices. Opt for high-quality baking chocolate for a rich flavor profile. Dark chocolate also works just make sure it is vegan.
- Coconut Milk: Full-fat coconut milk adds a tropical twist to the mousse, enhancing its creaminess. Choose fresh coconut milk without kernels for a smooth blend that complements the other ingredients perfectly.
How to Make This Vegan Chocolate Avocado Mousse?
- Blend Avocado and Coconut Milk: Start by placing the avocado flesh in a high-speed blender along with the coconut milk.
- Blend until the mixture achieves a silky smooth consistency.
- Melt Chocolate: Fill a saucepan with water, placing a heat-resistant bowl on top. Add the vegan chocolate and melt it over medium-low heat.
- Blend Until Smooth: Pour the melted chocolate into the blender and blend with the avocado mixture until you achieve a velvety chocolate avocado mousse.
- Chill and Serve: Pour the mousse into small ramekins and refrigerate for an hour or until ready to serve. Top with raspberries and shaved chocolate for an extra touch of decadence.
Tip: top with some fresh raspberries for a delicious and colorful finish
Additions
Enhance the flavor of your chocolate avocado mousse by incorporating additional elements.

Get creative with variations, such as using dark cocoa or adding chocolate chips for an extra burst of richness.
Chocolate Pudding Recipe Serving Ideas
To serve this 3-ingredient chocolate avocado mousse, you can really use a number of different toppings and serving ideas. Below are just a few of my favorite ones:
- chopped nuts
- shredded coconut
- fresh fruits (fresh berries in the summer are amazing!)
- ice cream on the side
- a glass of milk on the side
How To Store The Chocolate Avocado Mousse
I find it the easiest to divide the mousse into the servings immediately after it's finished and store in smaller bowls in the fridge until serving. In case you don't want to serve right away, you can store in the fridge for about 3 days. But it's recommended it is covered so an airtight container is a good option.
The mousse can also be frozen and then thawed to enjoy later but this really isn't something I recommend. It will be safe to eat but the texture just won't be the same. And it really is not that complicated to make so I'd always recommend making before serving.
FAQ
Truthfully, the taste is not the same as the traditional chocolate mousse. You can sense that the taste is different but it does not have an avocado flavor. It tastes like a creamy, sweetened natural dessert.
I wouldn't recommend that. The rationale being that when the ingredients are blended into the mousse, the blades of the blender warm up causing the mousse to be warm once the smooth texture is formed. So if you were to serve it like that you would be serving a warm mousse. Refrigerating a bit is the better option.
