What is a Sugar Free Cake?
Sugar-free cakes are a phrase used for different types of sugarless cakes. While some would only find a sugar-free cake one without anything that can act as sugar, others would only consider removing refined sugar would make a cake sugar-free (and adding sweeteners such as monk fruit sweetener, honey, agave syrup, maple syrup).
Sugar is something that is used in cuisines all over the world and it is almost inevitable to make a dessert or sweet snack without it. However for those of you counting net carbs or just trying to make a healthy smash cake, this list is for you.
For me it is always about natural ingredients rather than artificial ones even if it means more calories. Scroll to the bottom of the article to find out different types of sweeteners that you can use.
Also don't forget to eat your cake right after your main meal to keep your blood sugar levels more steady:).

Natural vs. artificial sugar
The good thing is that there are more and more options for natural sweeteners rather that refined white sugar that used to be used as one of the main sweeteners for almost any dessert.
There are also artificial sweeteners on the market which are low or zero-calorie sweeteners but I tend to avoid those. For me it is always about natural ingredients rather than artificial ones even if it means more calories.
Health isn't zero or low-calorie. Health and healthy nutrition is all about choosing healthy, nutritious and natural ingredients when you can.
Types of Natural Sweeteners for No Sugar Cake Recipes
There is a high amount of different natural sweeteners that you can choose from. Usually it falls down to 2 or 3 that someone prefers, but for a great sugarless cake, any of the below you choose is a great option:
- coconut sugar
- birch sugar
- agave syrup
- date syrup or dates
How To Store Sugarless Cake
Sugarless cakes like any other cakes can be kept according to the following guidelines:
- at room temperature for 1 - 2 days if it's a sponge cake
- in the refrigerator for up to 3 days for cream cakes and 5 days for sponge cakes
- in the freezer for up to 3 months for cream cakes and 6 months for sponge cakes
A sugar-free cake can be stored as is, just simply put in the fridge/refrigerator. I however like to cut them up and store as individual pieces in containers.
