30 minutes to make these incredible Baked Carrot Chips that your kids will love. Just coat some carrot slices in olive oil and garlic powder, place them on a baking sheet and in 30 minutes you can have a healthy snack or a delicious side dish for your baby, toddler or yourself.

Carrot chips in a white bowl.

This recipe was inspired by the Zucchini Chips recipe which has been loved by so many of our readers since, like this homemade carrot chips recipe, is a recipe for a healthier alternative to regular chips.

Yep, and we fully understand the confusion - these are called Carrot Crisps in British English. Carrot chips in British English are more like Carrot fries (which we also have a recipe for here).

Why we love this recipe?

  • so easy to make, only 5 minutes of prep
  • great for whole family
  • easy way to make a healthy snack or delicious side dish
  • made with only 2 ingredients - olive oil and garlic powder

Ingredients

Labelled ingredients on white background.

Made from healthy simple ingredients.

  • Carrots - you want to use fresh firm carrots. Carrots are full of carotenoids (including beta-carotene), antioxidants that have been found to protect from cancer. Carrots mostly contain water and complex carbohydrates (and fiber) and are a low glycemic index food, meaning they don't spike up the blood sugar like processed carbs.
  • Extra virgin olive oil - yes, it does have a lower smoke point but it is one of the healthiest oils you can use due to the fact that it contains healthy mono-saturated fats that protect the cardiovascular system.
  • Garlic powder - used to give the roasted carrot chips that crisp taste

How to make carrot chips?

collage of 6 process shots showing how to make crispy carrot chips.

Follow these easy steps to make crunchy carrot chips.

  1. Preheat the oven to 220℃/450℉ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and scrub the whole carrots. You can peel the carrots but you also don't need to.
  3. Use paper towels or a clean dish cloth to dry them.
  4. Use a sharp knife to cut the carrots diagonally as paperthin and you can get them (you can also try using a mandolin slicer).
  5. Place the carrot slices in a large bowl, add olive oil, garlic powder and salt and coat them.
  6. Take each carrot slice and place them in a single layer on the parchment paper.
  7. Bake for about 20 minutes until you have crispy chips.

Top tip: one baking tray of this probably won't be enough so I would recommend prepping two trays to go in the oven one after the other.

Substitutions and Variations

  • you can use a different type of oil such as vegetable oil or avocado oil but we always recommend olive oil due to its superior nutritional profile and health benefits
  • use spices such as onion powder, ground sweet paprika, smoked paprika, chili powder, black pepper

How to store?

These will most likely end up being eaten straight away but you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I would not recommend freezing as they would get soggy.

FAQ

Are carrots good snacks?

Carrots are a great delicious snack as they have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. These chips are a great snack for toddler or adults.

How to make healthy chips?

If you want to make super healthy chips then taking root vegetables, coat them in olive oil and spices and roast like this roasted carrot chips recipe or zucchini chips recipe.

Can baby eat these healthy carrot chips?

I would avoid giving these to baby until about 12 months of age because it may be too hard for them to bite and they also contain salt. If making for baby remove the salt. You can see here different ways of preparing carrots for baby.

What to serve these with?

My kids eat them on their own as a tasty snack or sometimes as a side dish to chicken, chickpeas and salads. If serving on their own you can serve them with your favorite dip, spicy mayo or hummus.
