Ingredients

strawberries and yogurt in measuring cups
  • Strawberries - great source of vitamin C and fiber and they are high in antioxidants. Can use fresh or frozen strawberries. If using fresh strawberries get very red ones that are as sweet as you can get so the yogurt tastes nice. If using frozen strawberries you may need to add additional sweetener as frozen strawberries usually come a bit sour.
  • Yogurt - a great source of protein, calcium probiotic bacteria which not only help keep the gut healthy but can also boost the immune system. You can use greek yogurt, plain yogurt, sheep's or goat's yogurt or vegan alternatives. The creamier the yogurt the better the taste for me personally.

How to make strawberry yogurt at home? Step by step

collage of 4 photos showing how to make strawberry yogurt

Homemade strawberry greek yogurt can be made by blending strawberries in a blender and adding them to greek yogurt. However, if we cook the strawberries they release their sugars and make the yogurt taste sweeter without us having to actually use and additional sweetener.

  1. Place the strawberries in a saucepan and cover them with water. Heat over medium low heat for about 10 minutes until the strawberries are soft and mushy. If you are using frozen strawberries rinse them first to get any frost off and then it may take a few minutes longer. Also add sweetener when cooking the frozen strawberries.
  2. Add them to the yogurt and mix and you get a beautiful pink yogurt.

Storage

  • in fridge in airtight container up to 3 days
  • in freezer in airtight container up to 3 months
  • thaw in fridge overnight and mix through before serving

Variations and substitutions

  • yogurt - you can make this from plain yogurt, greek yogurt, goats yogurt or vegan yogurt (such as coconut or almond)
  • sweetener for adults - use a liquid sweetener such as agave syrup, maple syrup or date syrup because it mixes better with yogurt than sugar would. You can also use honey but never give honey to children under 1 years old.
  • make a berry yogurt - mix with blueberry yogurt to make a mixed berry yogurt

How to use?

  • with homemade granola
  • make popsicles by freezing it in silicone molds
  • make yogurt bark
  • smoothies
  • use in overnight oats

FAQ

Can I make this dairy free homemade strawberry yogurt?

Yes this yogurt can be made dairy-free by using a plant based yogurt alternative such as almond or coconut yogurt and then mixing it with the cooked strawberries.

Is strawberry yogurt good or bad for you?

Homemade strawberry yogurt can be a great snack or even dessert for anyone. Just as long as it has no added sugar, especially refined sugar.
The plain yogurt as a fermented dairy product can be a great food for the gut and the digestive system. And the antioxidants and phytonutrients from the strawberries can keep the body healthy and energized!

Is strawberry yogurt good for babies?

Babies can have this homemade strawberry yogurt made just from yogurt and strawberries (make sure you tested each ingredient separately for allergies beforehand). Majority of store-bought strawberry yogurts contain added sugar, preservatives and artificial flavors that are not great for baby's healthy.
