Ingredients

ingredients in a bowls - honey, vanilla extract and plain yogurt

3 ingredients that you have on hand or can easily get from the store.

  • greek yogurt - use full fat for full flavor and if giving to kids. You can also make vanilla yogurt from plain yogurt, goats yogurt or a vegan substitute.
  • vanilla extract - majority will have some sort of alcohol content. While it is minute if serving to babies purchase one with no alcohol. You also want real vanilla extract, not an imitation. This one from SImply Organic I have found to tick those boxes and is suitable for kids.
  • honey - not needed but tastes so amazingly in a creamy vanilla yogurt

How to make? Step by step

collage of the first 2 steps
  1. Place your plain or greek yogurt in a bowl and add the vanilla extract and honey if using
  2. Mix with a spoon or even better a whisk until combined.
  3. Enjoy or store

Storage

  • in fridge in airtight container up to 3 days
  • in freezer in airtight container up to 3 months
  • thaw in fridge overnight and mix through before serving

Variations and substitutions

  • yogurt - you can make this from plain yogurt, greek yogurt, goats yogurt or vegan yogurt (such as coconut or almond)
  • vanilla - you can use vanilla bean paste in half the amount of the vanilla extract
  • sweetner - use a liquid sweetener because it mixes better with yogurt than sugar would
  • spices - add cinnamon and nutmeg for a more hearty flavor, or even pumpkin spice

How to use?

  • with homemade granola
  • make popsicles by freezing it in silicone molds
  • make yogurt bark
  • use in overnight oats
  • smoothies

FAQ

How to make vanilla yogurt from plain yogurt?

Add vanilla extract and sweetener (optional) to the plain yogurt and mix thoroughly and you get homemade vanilla yogurt.

Can I use a low fat yogurt?

You can but it may not be as creamy. This recipe can be made with any type of plain yogurt that you usually purchase.

Is vanilla yogurt full of sugar?

Store-bought varieties tend to have quite a lot of sugar, depending on the brand. In this homemade recipe it is up to you whether or not you add sugar so you can make a healthy version.

Is this suitable for babies?

This is suitable for babies only if made without honey. Babies under 1 years old should not be given honey due to risk of botulism.
However, you can make this recipe without the honey and it will be better for you baby, toddler or bigger kid since it is delicious but does not contain the high amount of sugar that store-bought varieties do.
